Personal Care Series : Everyday Tips 12 December 2021 – Posted in: General

We come from different walks of life, all have goals and dreams, big or small. We are so different yet so alike in many ways. One of the ways we are alike is what happens when we do not take our hygiene seriously, we smell…bad. Body odor, mouth odor, these are things that should not exist if we are being honest because they are frankly terrible. Terrible for the owner of the smell and the people who have to endure being around the smell. Here are some ways important parts of us can smell right and tools we can use to get results:

MOUTH (Teeth and Tongue)

We taste with our tongue and chew with our teeth. So food particles sometimes get stuck in between our teeth and if left unattended to, the bacteria in our mouths feed on them, acids are formed as by products and that in turn damages our teeth and causes bad breath. This is how plaques and eventually tartar are formed. So how do we care for our teeth and tongue?

  1. Stay hydrated: This allows the flow of saliva that will help clear away some food and bacteria that has collected between the teeth. Also, swilling water in your mouth after a meal and spitting it out is also a helpful habit to have.
  2. Brush twice daily: Use a toothbrush with firm but flexible bristles. This helps clean out the debris lodged in between our teeth and on our molars. Toothbrushes should be changed every three months. Old toothbrushes do you no good.
  3. Get a tongue scraper/cleaner: Sometimes using a toothbrush to clean your tongue isn’t effective. Tongue scrapers are an important item to own and they are inexpensive and can be found in supermarkets around you.
  4. Floss after every meal: Dental floss is still the most effective way to get rid of trapped food and excess bad bacteria. It is thin enough to get in the tightest of spaces between your teeth. Dental floss can be bought at pharmacies and supermarkets.
  5. Dentist visit: It is recommended that we visit the dentist at least twice a year. Sometimes it can be more depending on what your dentist recommends.

If practicing all these does not help you get fresh breath, you are advised to see a dentist.

We live in a country that is humid, so we are constantly trying not to sweat buckets. Sweat and bacteria are a smelly combination, literally. To help us control sweat and smell, here are a couple of tips:

  1. Shave often. Hair traps dirt and sweat so shaving often is beneficial. Shaving sticks or hair removal cream can be used.
  2. Bath with a sponge.
  3. Buy and use an antiperspirant/roll-on/deodorant.
  4. Change your underwear daily, male and female.

Additional tips for smelling right:

  • Wear clean clothes that have been properly dried.
  • Dress with the weather in mind. Heavy and/or dark colours are a no no when the weather is hot.
  • Wash your hair frequently. This includes the beard for guys.
